This remarkable collection of clips reminded me of my own surprise return from Iraq for my two weeks leave. After walking in on my daughter Kelley, I took her phone and called my daughter Katherine.

I had called my kids regularly since I deployed, so the conversation continued normally until Katie asked, “Hey, how are you calling me from Kelley’s phone?”

A split-second later she realized what had happened and started scream-crying, which started my own gushers.

Terrible things happen during military training and, of course, during overseas deployments. In my experience, the chance that I could have been killed was understood, but never spoken.

For the troops and their loved ones, coming home means the unspoken can remain unspoken.
