My Son's Future

As bad as it seems to us right now these will be the “good old days” for our children.  My son just finished his first year of college and is looking for a job like many Americans.  Today there are ecological disasters, world hunger, threats of terrorism and yet it’s his summer break.  It’s all relative.  I see people his age appearing as if they are auditioning for the circus.  Now I wonder if my parents thought the same thing about me.  While we are bemoaning being taxed to death, cheated and lied to by elected officials this is the norm now for my son’s generation.  I just want to share some hope with you that the future of America is not lost.

Not all of them are clowns, I have seen many under “twenty-something’s” that give me such hope for America.  Behind them are parents that have paid attention, provided and given of themselves to ensure that their child didn’t lose his or her way.  I have seen and talked to them on college campuses defending the right to keep and bear arms.  I have spoken with them on internet talk shows like on www.windowstoliberty.com. I have heard my son explain why he will not follow certain events or personalities.  So even in what seems like the “worst of times” it is also “the age of wisdom.”  It is a time to learn and listen.

As I looked back over the past nineteen years of my son’s life and remember when I first felt him kick in my wife’s womb, and a lot has happened in the world.  We have had many technical advances, social and cultural media shifts.  The future my son will operate in will utilize all the things available today in a more segregated way.  It is separate but equal.  We are going back to “families,” or “tribes” known to marketers as niches.  The difference now is today we have the freedom to choose which group you want to belong, and it is not necessarily labeled by religion, race or geography.  They have their own channels.  They create their own news and produce their own entertainment.  The only Monopoly left will be the game.  They don’t look at the government any different than they would a business.  They aren’t disappointed or shocked when a Congressperson is busted.  They grew up with it.  I think his generation is more accepting of alternatives to everything.  The future of this country then will survive because of innovation, improvisation and diversity.  It is truly “all good.”

As a father I trust that he will keep to the core values I tried to demonstrate.  He has already given me hope for the next generation because he is not following the crowd and believes in values like honor and integrity long before I did in the military.  The young people you see misrepresenting themselves, wasting precious time or without a clue are not all of our youth.  We have some good children out here.  America will survive because of them.  They hear the same rhetoric we do.  They see the convictions and false faces of current leaders, and it is teaching them.  They say it differently but they understand the U.S. Constitution and seek to preserve it.  Not all the kids with dreadlocks, or colored hair, piercing and tattoos are adrift.  Some are members of Students for Concealed on Campus.  Some are active into politics.  Some are media producers sharing the truth.  And even those that don’t know what they “want to be when they grow up” know what they are not, and that is lost.  You can find them at church, synagogue, and working socially online with their “fams” and “fans.”  It looks different but the future my son has shown me has given me hope.

Encourage your child, he/she is our future and there is hope in them.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way."  – Charles Dickens
