That particular question was not answered by George Washington and the others in the rules they left us in establishing the republic that they had given us at such great sacrifice.  Cynics as some of them were, realists as most of them were, and hopeful for the best for their new nation as all of them were, it clearly did not occur to this group of remarkable men that in the future of the United States of America leadership could be elected who would despise and work to destroy the nation. The Obama Administration and its executive and legislative minions have assumed total control of power in Washington DC, and they are rapidly dismantling our freedoms while completely ignoring the Constitution (the rules previously referred to). What can be done to stop the tremendous damage in the short term was unfortunately not included on the 18th Century instructions on how to continue to be the United States of America.
When it is required by the state (our current rulers) to get the permission of the Environmental Protection Agency to sell our houses; when we are forbidden by the state to buy the kinds of light bulbs we prefer; when we are disallowed by the state to home-school our children; when we watch the state, despite our disapproval, spend not only our money, but that of our children and grandchildren for the benefit of the state’s massive new entitlement programs, programs that the American people did not and do not want; when we see our Justice Department nullify a conviction of those filmed intimidating voters in Philadelphia based on the racial bigotry of those currently in power; when we observe the preferred religion of the Obama Administration (Allah be praised) taking precedence in so many of our institutions, e.g., Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, TSA, NASA (NASA?!?!), etc. while any manifestations of our country’s traditional American faiths of Christianity and Judaism are increasingly forbidden by the state; and while the state takes legal action against the governor of a sovereign state of the United States of America; then we have to admit that we are in a lawless state.  We are not only no longer operating by the rules our Founders gave us, we are actually no longer a nation of laws, but a nation of men, something the Founders greatly feared.

Unfortunately, not enough to let us know what to do about it, other than watch our nation being destroyed by a group of men who loathe the nation we love.

These are not good men who are accomplishing this extraordinary feat; these are men, and women, who are driven by a provenly unworkable statist system implementing a destructive redistributionist ideology to work at warp speed to rid our nation of the determination of the individual to be supplanted by the collective dependency on the increasingly powerful state.   And it is working.

It is stunning how blatantly this current regime is accomplishing these goals. Not only does this Administration not care about the laws that were made over 220 years ago explaining how this country is meant to work, they also don’t care who knows what they are doing. In their brilliance, our Founders made it possible for the Constitution to be amended, purposely through a lengthy and difficult process, as the needs of the nation and its people might require.  Known as the Bill of Rights, this document insured that as history progressed and the country’s needs changed, that appropriate revisions could become part of the rules.  It was perhaps naively assumed by Washington and the others that these would be changes beneficial to the nation.

As prescient as they were, no one could predict what hope and change would bring to America.

No one could predict that one day we would be governed by people who had no respect for the people of the United States, who would rule rather than represent the citizens of America and who would do whatever they wanted, though completely against the “consent of the governed.”

Every single one of the 18th Century group of extraordinary men expressed doubt as to the natural goodness of man, and many suggested various means of protecting and preserving the nation should the more salubrious aspects of  a future leader do harm to the country and its people.. According to Edmund Burke:  “There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men,”

And from James Madison: "If men were angels, no government would be necessary.  If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.”

And from Thomas Paine: "The greatest tyrannies are always perpetrated in the name of the noblest causes.”

And from John Adams:  "It is weakness rather than wickedness which renders men unfit to be trusted with unlimited power."

And perhaps the most prescient comment, again from Edmund Burke:  "Those who have been once intoxicated with power and have derived any kind of emolument from it can never willingly abandon it."

There were also members of the group who expressed wariness of those who might give in to the tyranny of being ruled by the state, rather than live promised lives of self determination as free men.  According to Thomas Jefferson: "Against us are all timid men who prefer the calm of despotism to the boisterous sea of liberty. We are likely to preserve the liberty we have obtained only by unremitting labors and perils."

And from Benjamin Franklin: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

And from Alexander Hamilton: "A nation which can prefer disgrace to danger is prepared for a master, and deserves one!"

And from the firebrand Samuel Adams: "If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

A final quote from Jefferson is necessary: "To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association–the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it."

It took the freak happenstance in 2008 of the confluence of the most far left Congress we have ever experienced, combined with a radical President and those of that ilk he brought to his Administration, who at lock step are taking increasing and unconstitutional amounts of power in order to more completely restructure our country as a socialist state.  The other essential factor is the compliance of the majority of the formerly free press, which fortunately for the radicals in power are not only complicit, they are gleefully participating in America’s downfall.  The America that Obama and his ilk are ‘fundamentally transforming” is becoming as totalitarian and as state-controlled as any of the most despotic communist and socialist regimes in history.  Obama and his people wield their power with the worst of intentions for the United States and its citizens, and though they still find it necessary to consistently lie to the American people about what they are doing, while being treated as serious leaders by the sycophantic press, we can see for ourselves the effect of Obama’s policies. We are being destroyed without a shot being fired. And there doesn’t seem to be a thing we can do about it.

We were given means to remove destructive leadership by our Founders:  a free press, impeachment, or the voting booth.  Forget the first one, and neither of the other two is practicable in putting an immediate stop to the irrevocable reverse of America’s fortunes.  In the initial of the two, impeachment and conviction are determined only by the Houses of Congress, and both the House and the Senate are run by America-hating leftists who are in complete agreement with Obama.  The next alternative, the voting booth, can be effective later this year, but is not a viable option in stopping the anarchy that is occurring in Washington right now.  It is even more terrifying when we can see what Obama has done in a slender year and a half – he has two and a half years to go.

No where in our Constitution are the American people told how to stop the destruction of our country by our own government.

The only precedent to which we can turn is actually pre-Constitution, when a courageous and freedom-loving people banded together, led by determined and extraordinary men, at the sacrifice of everything they cherished and treasured, to rid themselves of tyranny.  They considered their tremendous sacrifice worth it.

These patriots already loved their as yet unformed nation, because they knew the republic they would be responsible for founding would for the first time in history guarantee freedom and the rights of man.

It was a wrenchingly difficult, though ultimately quite simple, decision, for these American patriots.  They could either helplessly watch as more of their freedoms were taken from them by their increasingly tyrannical rulers, or they could do what could later be identified as quintessentially American.  They would stand up, do what they had to do no matter how difficult, and rid themselves of tyranny.  Only then could they secure their freedom, and that of future Americans.

As Thomas Jefferson said in 1775: “The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite."

Indeed, Mr. Jefferson.
