As I was sitting in the “green room” at the FOX studios in New York City on June 23rd, 2010 John Stossel sat down beside me and asked in that famous Stossel tone , “Armed American Radio?…So how can a radio…be armed”? I’m sure he took notice of the puzzled look on my face as I instantly quipped, “The radio can’t…but the host and listeners, are”! He smiled, and commented that he liked the quick wit and promised me that he wouldn’t ask me anything like that on camera. He didn’t.
The Stossel show that aired later that week and which I participated on that day was titled ‘More Guns, Less Crime’ and it was an honor to be asked to appear on FOX Business Channel and do my part to defend our uniquely American right to keep and bear arms in that forum. Joining me were freedom fighters and patriots such as author John Lott, Luby’s massacre survivor Suzanna Hupp, David Burnett from Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, Nikki Goeser whose husband was murdered in a TN bar last year, and brilliant pro-gun attorney Alan Gura who won both the Heller (DC) and McDonald (Chicago) Supreme Court gun ban cases and all of whom have appeared as guests on Armed American Radio.
So who am I and what is Armed American Radio, anyway? My name is Mark Walters and I am the nationally syndicated host of one of the fastest growing radio broadcasts in America. More specifically, I am the host of the fastest growing, nationally syndicated firearms related radio program in the nation directed entirely at the individual who has made the decision to carry a gun for self-defense or who may be considering it. The second amendment “ain’t about huntin”, folks and neither is Armed American Radio.
As freedom loving Americans continue to purchase their beloved guns in record numbers and more and more of us obtain concealed carry permits (you know, the “bear arms” part of the second amendment), Armed American Radio is there to support that decision and openly discuss your right to carry. AAR brings freedom, or as I like to say on the air, “I’m filling your prescription for freedom from the Palm Beaches of Florida to the crab fishing vessels of Alaska every Sunday evening from 8-11pm ET, 5-8pm PT.”
Armed American Radio has a great story behind it and it’s worth talking about. You see, back in November 2002 I became the intended victim of what I can only describe as an apparent attempted carjacking while stopped at a traffic signal on my way to work in Tampa, Florida. Much to the chagrin of the two criminals who I can only assume wanted my car or more, I was legally armed that mid-November morning. In the blink of an eye I became one of the estimated millions of citizens who use a handgun every year to defend themselves without having to pull the trigger, the mere display of my gun instantly ending the impending attack against me that day.
I later wrote a story about that incident titled ‘The Importance of Carrying Your Gun 100% of the Time’ for Concealed Carry Magazine, the flagship publication of the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and as a result, became a regular columnist penning The Ordinary Guy column for each successive issue. The incident also became the first chapter of my book, Lessons from Armed America co-written with Concealed Carry Magazine editor and firearms instructor, Kathy Jackson which chronicles and analyzes stories of ordinary people who had or wished they had a gun to defend themselves during vicious attacks.
A lot has changed since then as the magazine subscription and membership to the USCCA has exploded with tens of thousands of members and readers in every state in the nation. Fueling that growth has been a resurgence in the second amendment right to keep and (specifically) bear arms over the years and 48 states now have some sort of right to carry laws on the books since the groundbreaking Florida Concealed Carry law passed in 1987. (Only Illinois and Wisconsin currently have a complete ban on concealed handgun possession…for now).
Also stoking the fires of freedom to possess a gun for self-defense was the landmark Heller decision in 2008 that eradicated the unconstitutional Washington, DC gun ban and also opened the doors for the recently decided McDonald v. Chicago case. That case smacked Boss Daley in the head with a copy of the U.S. Constitution and struck down his Chicago gun ban just weeks ago.
Let’s not forget the election of “The One”, President Barack Hussein Obama in 2008. A rabid, gun hating, liberal who never missed an opportunity to vote against the right to keep and bear arms when given the opportunity, Obama has ignited a passion in gun owners and “wannabee” gun owners since it became apparent that he had duped enough American voters into believing he was something other than what he really is, a gun hating leftist.
As a result of these scenarios among others, and with the support of the United States Concealed Carry Association, Armed American Radio was born.
Airing in Atlanta, GA from the studios of Salem Radio’s Intelligent Talk 920 AM WGKA on April, 26 2009 for one hour in just that one city, AAR took to the airwaves for one purpose only, to talk about the right to pack heat in defense of yourself and your loved ones and the training and responsibility that comes with that right. To the shock of station management, four very short months later Armed American Radio was syndicated nationally and available to every radio station in the United States that had the guts to air the truth about concealed carry and those of us who have made the decision not to be victims. The response from radio stations that had the guts continues to be overwhelming as the program continues to add new affiliates almost weekly. In less than 10 months of national syndication AAR is defying the laws of broadcasting and now airs on close to 50 radio stations in 19 states and Washington, DC having grown to a three hour program every Sunday evening…all in less than one year!
As I mentioned above, the second amendment isn’t about hunting and neither is Armed American Radio. I don’t really care too much about the value of that shotgun grandpa left you (no offense, I’m sure it’s really nice) but my guests and I do care deeply about your ability to defend your life with the sidearm of your choice against a wide array of scumbags that walk our streets. My guest lineup over the last year has been nothing short of amazing and has included pro-gun national and local politicians, candidates for Governor, active duty sheriff’s and sheriff candidates from counties across the nation, television hosts, authors, crime victims and even the occasional rock star (Ted Nugent), and the nations foremost firearms training experts, to mention just a few.
Here’s the part I like the best and apparently so do Armed American Radio listeners.
This isn’t the debate club.
The second amendment isn’t open for debate on AAR, it says what it means and it means what it says. You know it, I know it and they know it and as a result you will never hear the anti-gun whining and crying from freedom-haters and gun grabbers on Armed American Radio. This radio show belongs to all lawfully armed Americans, not the anti-gun crowd. If you want to listen to the Brady Campaign and other freedom hating groups please tune to any major “mainstream” TV network, any cable news outlet or pick up any one of the thousands of gun-hating newspapers or websites that regularly give the gun-haters a voice.
Not here! Not on Armed American Radio! We talk about them, not to them!
