Saying goodbye to the hypocritical NFL

Heart disease—linked to a poor diet heavy in fat-filled fast foods and salt-laden pre-packaged foods—killed more Americans in 2010 (597,689) than World War I (116,516) and World War II (405,399) combined with Vietnam (58,209), with the Iraq and Afghan wars (6,626), thrown in for good measure. The National Football League is still happier than Scrooge to take money from McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Campbell’s Soup, and every other purveyor of caloric death that comes their way.

Drunk driving deaths increased 4.6% last year according to MADD; NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is still delighted to accept advertising from every beer company with deep pockets.

Adam Lanza had 83,000 video game kills practicing for Sandy Hook, but the NFL doesn’t bat an eye as they take sacks full of cash to promote the very video game series he used to “train” himself.

But there is something about a well-adjusted former Marine coming home to his beautiful wife and baby girl and promising to defend them against criminals that just pisses the No Fun League off.

I’ll tell you what Roger Goodell; it’s your league. You have every right to suck up every dollar from every beer merchant, impotence drug manufacturer, video violence vendor, and junk food manufacturer that comes your way. You also have the right to turn away ads from companies that build the products that equip the men and women out there on the front lines who protect your freedom to earn billions on the shattered backs and brain-damaged minds of other men who are your modern-day gladiators.

We however, are free to turn our backs on a sport that is coming to represent the worst of American values.

Enjoy your game, Roger.

“A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks.”
