Video: 2014 Battle of Funkstown reenactment

After the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, ended Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s hopes of bringing the war to the North, he retreated back into Maryland.

At the July 10, 1863 Battle of Funkstown, Maryland, Northern forces attempted to box in Lee between the Union positions to the north and a new Union position at Funkstown that would prevent liaison between Lee and his home territory in Northern Virginia. Confederate Cavalry Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, whose failure to screen Lee and recon Union maneuvers contributed to the loss at Gettysburg, was masterful at Funkstown turning away the Union threat.
