At an Oct. 17 ceremony at Washington’s Marine Barracks, the 36th Marine Commandant Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., accepted command from retiring commandant Gen. James F. Amos, who is leaving the service after 44 years in uniform.

“This morning, I’m not as proud to be the commandant as I am simply to wear the cloth of a United States Marine,” said Dunford to the packed out Marines in formation and the bleachers, packed out guests and dignitaries, including Secretary of Defense Charles T. “Chuck”Hagel. “That I can say of of this, in large part, is due to the leadership of the 35th commandant.”
