Hey, look! Hollywood has jumped on board with Everytown and VH1 to be hypocritical again!

From the VH1 website:

More than 30,000 Americans die every year due to gun violence. That’s an average of 91 Americans every day. This year VH1 will join the Wear Orange campaign on June 2 for National Gun Violence Awareness Day to call for an end to gun violence and to honor far too many lives cut short.

Chicago teens wanted to honor the life of their friend and inspired the Wear Orange campaign. What started in their high school has grown into a national movement, and on June 2nd – Hadiya’s birthday – people nationwide will again come together to show their support for an America free from gun violence.

Last year on June 2, millions of Americans joined Hadiya’s friends and Everytown for Gun Safety, a movement of Americans working to end gun violence, by wearing orange and changing Facebook and Twitter photos to orange.

Celebrities including BJ the Chicago Kid, Julianne Moore, Russell Simmons, Sarah Silverman, Michael Stipe, Aasif Mandvi, and Questlove; sports teams like the New York Mets; and over 70 US mayors joined the Wear Orange campaign in protest of gun violence.

This June 2, stars of VH1 will be participating and we will be changing the VH1 logo on-air to orange. You can get involved by heading to WearOrange.org and wearing orange on June 2.

Well first of all, while I applaud Hadiya’s friends and family for taking action after losing a loved one, I take issue with the fact that wearing orange isn’t going to stop gun violence in Chicago. Try enforcing the law, criminal justice reform, outreach programs to save at risk kids, or, oh I don’t know, stop letting criminals out of jail!

Secondly, the “30,000 Americans die every year due to gun violence” zombie gun lie is so played, it’s painful. It’s been covered, debunked, proven false, and burned at the stake so many times, I’m surprised they keep running with it.

Jazz Shaw covered it at great length on HotAir and it boils down to this:

One study after another has shown that legally purchased weapons, following all the normal firearms transfer rules, for somewhere between six and eight percent of all murders. And the majority of those were domestic violence incidents, violence between family members, crimes of passion and, yes… murders committed by the insane. But let’s give the gun grabbers the benefit of the doubt, round it up and say that ten percent were committed with legally purchased guns. That works out to around 850.

850 is too many people, but it’s a far cry from more than 32,000 per year.

Finally, I say we should wear green on June 2nd. Green means “go”, and law abiding gun owners carry, train, and are prepared to defend themselves and protect others from the very real criminal threat that continues to feed the gun control monster. Let’s celebrate those of us who carry! Celebrate the right to carry and how gun owners can and DO stop crimes.
