Before our GI’s stormed the beaches of Utah and Omaha beaches in Normandy 72 years ago today, they had to go through training with their weapons. The most common weapon for both airborne and amphibious soldiers was the M1 Garand, the only general-issue semi-automatic rifle of the Second World War, which later went on to battle in the Korean War.

Though no longer in military service, the Garand is still a favorite of American riflemen today.
