Two Weeks After OSU Attack, Lawmakers Pave Way For Campus Carry In Ohio

Less than two weeks after a police officer shot dead an Islamic terrorist on the campus of Ohio State University, legislators have passed a law expanding where concealed carry permit holders can carry their handguns, and included a provision that would allow the board of trustees of Ohio’s public universities to allow campus carry.

Lawmakers in Ohio approved a bill on Friday that opens the way for licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons on college campuses, less than two weeks after a man injured 11 in a stabbing attack at Ohio State University.

State senators passed the bill 22-8 after representatives approved it 68-25 late on Thursday, sending the bill to the desk of Republican Governor John Kasich for his signature.

If signed into law, the board of trustees at Ohio’s public universities would have the option to allow for concealed-carry on campuses.

The legislation also removed a state ban on carrying a concealed weapon in public areas of airports and daycare centers, local media reported. Operators would be able to choose whether to prohibit guns in their buildings.

It’s important to note that if Governor John Kasich signs the bill—and he’s not the most gun-friendly Republican governor, so it is less than a 100% certainty—then it doesn’t mean people can immediately start lawfully carrying concealed at Ohio’s public universities.

Please don’t be that guy who gets arrested becuase he only skimmed a headline.

The law merely paves the was for university trustees to have the legal option to allow campus carry, if they decide to allow it. I’m not sure about Ohio’s trustees, but I do know that in most parts of the country university faculty, staff, and administrators run the ideological gamut of thought from Lenin to Marx, and they’re likely going to lobby, whine, cajole, and threaten the trustees to keep a ban on campus carry in place.

It’s likely going to take a lot of work to turn the possibility of campus carry into a reality of campus carry into law in Ohio, but the legislators are to be commended for passing this law so quickly.

In related news, a completely nutty group of university racists (the OSU Coalition for Black Liberation) is now claiming that the terrorist was was shot was “wrongly” killed by police as he tried to murder OSU students.

An Ohio State University (OSU) student who attempted to go on a stabbing spree last month before being gunned down by a nearby officer has been added to a protest list of non-whites “wrongly” shot and killed by a police.

The OSU Coalition for Black Liberation is a campus protest group on OSU’s main campus in Columbus. The group held a rally Wednesday to protest the death of young black men at the hands of police, and read off a list of non-white men who had been killed by police in the last two months. Among the names read off was that of Abdul Razak Ali Artan.

Artan, of course, is the man who attempted to kill his classmates last week by attacking them with his car and then going on a stabbing spree.

I rather doubt the two idiots holding up that sign would complain quite as much about the officer’s application of force if Artan was running at them with an upraised knife.

In fact, I’m throughly convinced they’d scream for him to fire.
