According to Deputy Mike Barraza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lancaster Station, an LA Sheriff’s Sergeant was shot this afternoon while responding to a call for service at 12:35 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7.
The sheriff’s sergeant was transported to nearby Antelope Valley Hospital in grave condition.
Speaking from the hospital, Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris told reporters the officer had been shot in the face. Although he knew the officer well, Parris did not release his name, saying only, “This always seems to happen to the most beloved deputies.”
Initially, the sheriff’s headquarters reported that two deputies had been shot and wounded. Later, Sheriff Jim McDonnell said that one deputy was shot and another was injured. “It was a roll up burglary call. It was a simple call,” McDonnell said. “We don’t know if it was an ambush or anything.”
Fox11 Los Angeles’ arial coverage of the manhunt showed an individual surrendering to authorities after a search for the shooter near Antelope Valley College, which told people to shelter in place. It was not immediately clear if that individual was the shooter.
At 2:15 p.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida confirmed one person was in custody and no suspects were outstanding.
The condition of the officers is unknown at this time. We will continue to update this story as information becomes available.
