Newsweek Acknowledges Declining Support For Gun Control

The mainstream media is no friend to anyone who opposes gun control. They’ve painted gun rights advocates as every brand of insane they can think of and amplify any seeming misstep until it’s a national issue. The supposedly unbiased media has a major bias when it comes to gun control.

Yet sometimes, they have to report the facts, even if they don’t like them. Otherwise, even the dimmest bulb will recognize their biases.

That’s probably why they’re reporting some bad news for the gun control crowd.

The share of Americans who favor stricter gun laws is lower today than it was in 2019, according to a new survey released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.

The nonpartisan think tank found that just 53 percent of U.S. adults think gun laws should be stricter than they currently are—a 7-point drop from September 2019, when six in 10 Americans backed tougher firearm legislation.

Democrats are the most likely to say gun laws should be stricter than they are today. Eighty-one percent held that view in the most recent survey, a slight decline from 86 percent in 2019.

About half of Republicans and Republican leaners (53 percent) say that gun laws are currently about right, while 20 percent think they should be more strict. Since 2019, the share of Republicans favoring stricter gun laws has declined 11 points.

The findings of the poll come amid a recent string of mass shootings. Pew conducted the study between April 5 and 11, after two back-to-back mass shootings left 18 people dead.

In other words, they’ll report it, but they won’t like it and will make it clear they don’t think it’s right.

Yet those “back-to-back mass shootings” kind of illustrates the point. One took place in Atlanta, a city in a state with a pretty pro-gun record for the most part. The other took place in Boulder, a city in a heavily gun-controlled state. It didn’t matter.

Hell, Boulder was the more deadly of the two attacks.

Frankly, a lot of people see that and recognize the truth, that gun control is a nice soundbite, but it doesn’t protect lives. It never has. That’s because the criminally minded–including mass shooters, it should be noted–will do whatever they have to do in order to obtain firearms.

A lot of people are starting to see that, which is why support for gun control is declining, even among Democrats. Only the truly blind can ignore the fact that every state is plagued by these shootings regardless of their gun laws. If these laws worked as advertised, that wouldn’t happen, but they do.

Plus, frankly, people are starting to become immune to the horrors of mass shootings.

See, a lot of support for gun control comes as a visceral, knee-jerk reaction to the horrors of those shootings. It’s not that people thought gun control was a good idea from a logical standpoint, they just reacted based on their emotions. Now, they’re becoming numb to mass shootings, which means they’re able to think more critically about them.

While that’s a horrible situation to contemplate since it means they’re becoming too common, it also means people aren’t going to stick with anti-gun rhetoric that thrives on emotion.

Either way, that’s a good thing for gun rights.
