Deceased suspect identified in Navy Yard shooting

We promised this morning not to speculate about the Washington Navy Yard shooting until we could confirm details, and what we can confirm is troubling.

There is one identified shooter, Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas. He was an aviation electrician’s mate, 3rd class in the Navy Reserve who never deployed overseas, and who separated from the service in 2011. He was apparently shot and killed while engaging law enforcement officers.

For a time, authorities were attempting to find two other individuals that might have been carrying weapons as recorded on security cameras or reported by witnesses. One of those persons of interest has been cleared, and they are still attempting to confirm the identity of the other.

There were 12 other people shot and killed according to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. Other victims remain hospitalized.

Various news outlets are making claims regarding multiple firearms used, but we have not been able to confirm how many firearms were used, or what kind, through credible sources.

Please keep in mind that we do not consider most news outlets as credible primary sources of firearms identification.

To date, very little is know about Alexis, his motivations, or how he managed to carry out the attack.

Bearing Arms will update as we can provide credible information.
