FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy is injured after being accidentally shot by an uncle playing with a gun in St. Louis County.
The shooting happened Sunday night at an apartment complex in north St. Louis County. Police say a 20-year-old man was playing with a gun when it went off, striking the child.
The boy is hospitalized and expected to survive. His name and the name of the uncle have not been released, but police are expected to pursue charges.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A school district in northern Mississippi will teach students about gun safety after a 13-year-old boy was killed while hunting.
The Commercial Dispatch reports that an assembly will be planned before the end of the academic year on each campus in the Lowndes County School District.
Lynn Wright, the district superintendent, says because hunting is prevalent in the South, it’s important for students to learn how to be safe around guns.
Wright says he wants to help prevent any more tragedies like the Dec. 29 death of the 13-year-old New Hope Middle School student.
He said the district will ask employees from the sheriff’s office and the state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to speak at the assemblies.
CHICAGO, Il. (AP) – A man was shot while robbing someone Friday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.
The 23-year-old showed up at Mercy Hospital about 5:45 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Investigators think he was wounded when carrying out a robbery about 15 minutes earlier in the 4800 block of South Wolcott, police said.
He was transferred to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
LAKE WALES, Fla. (AP) — A man in Florida is facing charges after police say he held up a McDonald’s restaurant while customers were inside eating over the weekend.
Local media outlets report that Lake Wales police say Willie Watson III was arrested Sunday on armed robbery, gun possession and other charges.
Detectives say Watson was armed when he entered the restaurant that morning and fired a gunshot into the ceiling before telling everyone not to move. No one was hurt.
Police say the suspect went behind the counter but was unable to open the cash registers. He then took off in a minivan.
Officers later caught up with Watson, who was taken into custody.
It’s unclear if Watson has an attorney.
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Police say the number of homicides reported in Dayton last year matches a 16-year high for the western Ohio city.
The Dayton Daily News reports the number of homicides that occurred in Dayton jumped from 29 in 2015 to an unofficial count of 42 in 2016. The city also recorded 42 homicides in 2002 and again in 2006.
Chief Richard Biehl says there were a total of 46 homicides in Dayton last year, although four have already been ruled justifiable killings.
Three other homicides may also get that distinction once the cases are closed. Only criminal homicides are recorded as part of the official year-end tally.
Biehl says 37 of the 46 slayings have been cleared by his department. All but four of Dayton’s homicides in 2016 involved guns.
