Chicago Police Raids Over the Weekend Result in 120 Arrests

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says the department will take a targeted approach on crime in 2017.

Johnson made the commitment Monday as he announced the arrest of dozens of suspected gang members and the seizure weapons during a series of weekend raids by police.

According to Johnson, 120 people were arrested, including 83 with previous felony conviction. He said 19 guns, including assault weapons and shotguns, were seized.

Of the department’s targeted approach to crime, Johnson said it will include the use of specific data the department has been gathering, a new push to develop police-community partnerships in Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods and increased community engagement.

Chicago police made the arrests as January is shaping up to be more deadly than last year’s, which broke records with 51 murders.
