JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman whose conviction sparked a change in the state’s gun laws is now completely free and says she plans to run an organization to help victims of domestic violence caught up in the criminal justice system.
Marissa Alexander tells The Florida Times-Union she wants to help others because “from what I’ve been through I know a lot more about the system and how it fits together.”
The 36-year-old Alexander was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison after firing a shot near her estranged husband during an altercation. She contended she fired in self-defense. Alexander’s conviction was thrown out on appeal and she reached a plea deal in 2014. She was released from home detention this past week.
Her case was cited by legislators when they altered Florida’s mandatory sentencing law.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — An attorney for John Buncich has asked a federal judge if the indicted Lake County sheriff can have his guns back.
Buncich’s defense attorney filed the petition in U.S. District Court Friday. The Northwest Indiana Times reports the attorney is asking for the return of weapons the sheriff surrendered last year when he was charged with fraud and bribery. The sheriff’s attorney argues Buncich isn’t charged with a violent crime and “needs his firearms to carry out his employment.”
Buncich and others were named in a multicount indictment Nov. 18 alleging an illegal towing scheme in which the sheriff accepted bribes. Buncich has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
A federal magistrate released Buncich on bond with the condition he surrender firearms and not possess any while awaiting trial.

ATLANTA (AP) — A police officer shot a man to death outside an Atlanta Public Safety annex when the man tried to flee in a car while another officer was partially inside of it, authorities said Friday.
The two officers had gone to the building Thursday night to file paperwork when they noticed a suspicious man in a car in the parking lot, authorities said.
Officers initiated a conversation and the man exited the vehicle, then lunged back into the car and tried to flee, police said in a news release.
“One of the investigators was partially in the passenger side of the vehicle as the vehicle fled,” the release said.
Police said the man, whose name has not been released, had a warrant for his arrest from Fulton County and had a lengthy criminal history as well as gang affiliation. They also said a firearm was seen on the vehicle’s passenger side floorboard.
The race of the officer and the suspect has not been released.
Atlanta police Deputy Chief Darryl Tolleson said the officers weren’t injured.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into circumstances of the Thursday evening shooting on the city’s northwest side.
