At approximately 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, an off-duty Delaware State Trooper was involved in a domestic disturbance with her boyfriend. When New Castle County Police and Delaware State Police arrived at the scene, they found the severely battered trooper and her boyfriend with a gunshot to the upper torso.

It was later discovered that at some point during the altercation, the eight-year Delaware State Police veteran reached for her service weapon. She fired the weapon, shooting the boyfriend in the upper torso.

Both were taken to Christiana Medical Center, where the boyfriend, 43-year-old Maurice Ifill, was pronounced dead. The trooper arrived with serious injuries but, as of Monday afternoon, remains in stable condition.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences to look into the cause of Ifill’s death.

The investigation is still ongoing and the trooper’s name is not being released at this time.
