House Passes Resolution Honoring First Responders, Shooting Victims

Earlier today, the House of Representatives passed a resolution as a means of thanking three Capitol Police Officers -Crystal Griner, David Bailey and Henry Cabrera – for stepping in during yesterday’s tragic shooting. The three officers were assigned to Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s security detail.

House reading clerk Joe Novotny read the resolution out loud in a typical monotone voice, as done with legislative readings.

From Fox News:

The House “expresses its thanks” to first responders from Alexandria, Va., and “its hope for a speedy and full recovery for the injured.”

From The Hill:

The resolution, approved by voice vote, also expresses “hope for a full recovery for the injured.” Four people were shot by the gunman, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Zack Barth, a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), a lobbyist and one of the Capitol Police officers.

It “reaffirms that an attack on any member of Congress is an attack on every member, on the institution, and on the very principle of representative democracy; and stands firm in its belief that violence has no place in a pluralistic society where differences are settled through debate, ballots, and a legislative process, which rests at the bedrock of our representative democracy.”

After Novotny finished the resolution’s reading, representatives quickly stood up and gave a standing ovation, something that is out of the ordinary.

The resolution passed by a voice vote.
