As of late this afternoon, Majority Whip Steve Scalise is undergoing a third surgery. When Scalise was shot in the hip yesterday, the bullet fragmented a number of bones and tore through vital organs.
At 8:15pm EST on Wednesday, MedStar Washington, the hospital treating Scalise released the following statement in regards to his condition:
Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations. We will provide periodic updates.
From POLITICO:
According to sources familiar with Scalise’s condition, the third surgery was routine for gunshot victims with doctors checking the work they had performed the night before.
Scalise’s colleagues are trying to remain optimistic, despite what some witnessed and recounted. As of now, Republican leadership has asked members of Congress resist commenting on Scalise’s condition.
The Congressional baseball game is still taking place tonight. Leadership from both parties, including Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), as well as Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will be in attendance.
