According to France’s Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, the French police are confiscating guns from 100 people who are suspected of being Islamic militants.

“We traced about a hundred … We’re sizing up the situation and taking the weapons away,” Collomb told TV channel CNews.

The confiscation comes after public defenders confirmed that a man who died after rear-ending a police car had joined a gun club specifically used to train jihadists. He also stocked up on weapons and renewed his gun permit, despite being on a potential terrorist watch list.

According to prosecutors, the man had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Another 100 people just like this man who are legal gun owners have been identified on the terrorist watch list.

A parliamentary vote is taking place to extend emergency search-and-arrest powers given to police. These powers were given to police officers after Islamic gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in Paris in late 2015.

France has been under a state of emergency since the 2015 attacks and has been renewed five times. The state of emergency is set to expire this month but parliament is expected to extend the declaration until November.

More than 230 people have been killed by Islamic terrorists in France in the last two-and-a-half years.
