Two Pro-Gun Bills Headed to Congress After Recess

It’s easy to get lost in the negativity when so many states continue to pass rights-infringing legislation, but thankfully, two bills being proposed in the House that could provide victory for gun owners everywhere.

The first, Repealing the Gun Free School Zone Act, is being proposed by Rep. Steve Stockman of Texas.  For years now crime data has proven that the Gun Zone Act fails to slow or prevent shootings at schools…in fact it’s increased.  Posting a sign on school doors that proclaims “Gun Free Zone” only accomplishes one thing: incentivizing shooters to commit acts of violence.  If an active shooting situation arises, who will be there to defend our children?

Representative Richard Nugent of Florida introduced the second bill, known as the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, which would provide a national standard for nonresidents to carry concealed firearms in a different state.  Essentially, the resolution would allow any person with a valid state-issued concealed firearm permit to carry a concealed handgun in any other state that issues concealed firearm permits, or that does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms for lawful purposes.

Contrary to many gun owners’ fears, this would not create a federal gun registration or gun owner license, nor would it allow any federal agency to establish a federal standard for a carry permit.  Instead this bill simply allows gun owners the ability to conceal carry without having to worry about applying for a new permit in a different state.

Resolutions such as these have been thrown around before, but this time there’s a chance it makes it through.  States like Idaho have already started a similar program that recognizes valid concealed permits from all states.  So far, 14 other states have entered an agreement to uphold other permits.
