SAN ANTONIO –

A home invasion turned deadly at a North San Antonio apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

San Antonio police responded to a call for shots fired around 3 a.m. at the Wood Hollow Apartments in the 10300 block of Sahara Drive near San Pedro Avenue.

Investigators said three masked men kicked in the front door of an apartment unit and began to ransack the home.

Police said one of the suspects grabbed the tenant, 21-year-old Dmitri Lawrence Brown, by the throat, forced him down, then put a hand over his eyes while the other two suspects attempted to steal jewelry from the apartment.

As the suspects were leaving, Brown was able to get up and grab a gun, police said. He then shot and killed the suspect who had been holding him down, police said.

Brown also opened fire on the other two suspects, but they fled in a silver Dodge Charger.

Police said this all occurred with four children and their mother, 49-year-old Evangeline Tubig, inside the apartment. None of them were reportedly injured.

Several neighbors said they are concerned with the amount of crime at the apartment complex.

“We might end up moving out of this place, because it’s not safe here, obviously not. This is a bad spot,” Rogelio Cazares said.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting and have not determined why the apartment was targeted or what may have been stolen.

Brown was not expected to face charges, San Antonio police said.
