Bloomberg.com op-ed: say, that Wayne LaPierre guy knows what he's talking about

Wayne LaPierre and the NRA have been proven right. The only thing that stops a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun.

Somewhere, behind a wall of taxpayer-funded police bodyguards, miniature New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg must be howling over the op-ed on Bloomberg.com which concedes that the NRA’s vilified spokesman was right all along about the best ways to stop massacres:

Gun-control advocates think the only way to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them is to make it harder for everybody to get them.

They should listen to some of the things National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, their biggest nemesis, has been saying.

These aren’t the usual NRA cliches about how President Barack Obama’s anti-gun bureaucrats are using mass shootings as an excuse to seize everybody’s guns. After so many tragedies — Tucson, Arizona; Aurora, Colorado; Newtown, Connecticut; the WashingtonNavy Yard — most NRA members are appalled by gun violence. But what is LaPierre saying about what it would take to stop or reduce it?

While the admittedly liberal author of the piece, Craig Whitney, does get his digs in LaPierre, the simple fact of the matter is that he’s joining the post-recall reality that gun control is dead.

The people-controllers seem to be acknowledging that if they want to actually reduce the threat of mass violence, they’re going to have to stop attacking the rights of law-abiding citizens, start prosecuting gun crimes aggressively (something Eric Holder’s Department of Justice still won’t do), and put the dangerously mentally ill in padded cells before they act our their violent fantasies, not afterward.

Maybe if these measures start to have the effect on crime that gun control laws never did, they might even be encouraged to start fixing the culture they’ve “progressively” broken over the past century that has led to such disassociative behavior.

Nah… now I’m simply dreaming.
