If you listen to New York Senator Chuck Schumer and his fellow gun grabbers in the House and Senate, it almost sounds like the world itself will end if an expiring federal ban on plastic firearms isn’t just renewed, but substantially strengthened.

A longtime ban on undetectable firearms is scheduled to expire Dec. 9 and two Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer of New York and Bill Nelson of Florida, have called for a ban on plastic guns. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., also has introduced legislation on the issue.

“The expiration of this law, combined with advances in 3-D printing, make what was once a hypothetical threat into a terrifying reality,” said Schumer. “We are actively exploring all options to pass legislation that will eliminate the problem.”

We should start a discussion on the threat of plastic guns by first listing the names of all people killed and injured by shooters armed with printed plastic guns.

We can then proceed to a full listing of schools, government facilities, airports, and sporting events successfully penetrated by assassins, terrorists, criminals, and Cub Scouts armed with printed plastic guns.

Clearly, the mayhem is unprecedented, and the nonexistent slaughter demands harsh and immediate federal action without a moment to spare!

Let’s get serious for a moment.

Despite the hysteria from politicians on one side, and hype from 3D printed plastic gun designers on the other, the reality of plastic guns for the present still looks like this more than anything else.

Printed plastic guns are an infant technology, using crude, extremely bulky and impractical designs to create slow-loading, inaccurate, single-shot weapons that are of more danger to the shooter than any target more than an arm’s length away.

Even when plastics technology eventually overcomes the persistent detonation problems common in all printed guns tested to date, they are still slow-loading, single shot-shot firearms that render the shooter disarmed the moment he or she pulls the trigger. They are at best a momentary threat, and in reality, little threat at all.

Senator Schumer and his fellow gun-grabbers are wasting time that could be better spent undoing laws that they didn’t read before passing.
