A Prayer for Claire

Her name is Claire Davis, and she is loved.

She’s a smart and spunky 17-year-old senior at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, a One Direction fan (hey, there’s no accounting for taste in boy bands), and a horse lover.

At this moment, Claire is also in a coma in a hospital in Littleton, Colorado, her exhausted family nearby, hoping and praying for a miraculous Christmas recovery.

I’m here to tell her parents that such a recovery is indeed possible.

Two years ago a young lady in Sanford, FL, about Claire’s age was driving home when she fell asleep behind the wheel. The crash was horrific, and first responders didn’t think it was possible to find anyone alive inside the mangled car. She was life-flighted to a trauma hospital and placed in intensive care. She was in a coma for over a month, and then slowly, miraculously emerged. It took a lot of time, patience, rehabilitation, and prayer, but she is now in college and doing well.

Davis family and friends, I have faith that miracles occur all the time, and I have faith that Claire can also recover.

As for the horrific events that led to her current condition, I’m at a loss to explain why it happened. Perhaps Karl Pierson simply expressed the cruelty inherent to his communist beliefs as people of his ideology often have, though the barrel of a gun.

In times such as these, you must be wondering, “but what did she do to deserve this?” I am here to tell you unreservedly that she did nothing to deserve this, nor is there anything that you or anyone else in your family could have done to warrant her injury. God does not work like that. God gave man free will, large brains, and opposable thumbs. Throughout history our species has used these tools for both acts of incalculable cruelty and incredible compassion.

Let us use our hearts and free will for prayer and our minds and bodies for healing not just Claire, but a wounded community.

Let us pray for the souls of those who would exploit tragedy.

Let us be thankful that an armed sheriff’s deputy was able to quickly respond and prevent these horrific events from becoming an even greater tragedy.

We may not always have answers, but we can choose to have faith.
