We wrote earlier this month about the man who left a fully-loaded handgun in the toy department of a Myrtle Beach Target store. He has now been identified as David Dennis, and the police have a warrant out for his arrest:

Myrtle Beach police are searching for a man in connection with a gun that was found last month on a toy aisle in a Target store, authorities said.

An arrest warrant is issued for the man, David Dennis, charging him with unlawfully carrying a handgun in connection with the incident, Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes said.

It was unclear how police connected Dennis to the incident, but officers did collect video surveillance from the store.

Anyone with information regarding Dennis’ whereabouts can call Myrtle Beach police at 918-1382.

The gun, a 9mm handgun, was found by a Target employee in a toy aisle of the store about 6 p.m. May 30, police said.

The employee told police he was in the toy section when he noticed an empty wrapper he thought was left behind from a stolen item, according to the report. The employee said he was looking for the merchandise to match the wrappers, when he saw the handgun on a shelf.

The gun was laying in a toy box in plain view and at first the employee thought it was a toy, according to the report. The employee said he then noticed the gun was fully loaded.

While the legal charge probably wouldn’t stick, intentionally leaving a firearm in a toy department is—in my mind at least—attempted child murder.

Let’s hope that authorities are able to apprehend Mr. Dennis very soon now that he has been identified, and that the full weight of the legal system is brought to bear against him.
