Video: Sen. Paul performs pro bono eye surgery in Guatemala

NBC-News followed Sen. Randal H. “Rand” Paul (R.-Ky) on his humanitarian trip to Guatemala for a story that aired Aug. 24.

The Kentucky senator is an eye surgeon, who continues to see patients back home when the Senate is not is session. This trip was an extension of pro bono work he has done throughout his medical career.

Paul is walking a difficult path as he builds the foundation for his 2016 campaign for the White House at the same time one of his closest allies in the Senate, Sen. R. Edward “Ted” Cruz (R.-Texas) builds his own foundation. At some point, these friends will become rivals, but until then both men are campaigning as if the other is not in the race.

The best strategy is for Paul to be himself, which is what we see in the video.
