A security guard at the Downtown Miami Metromover station was saved by his sidearm Thursday when a disgruntled panhandler violently attacked him while on duty.

Miami Police investigators said the panhandler was asked by the guard to exit the Metromover. The man left but only to return shortly afterward.

After being asked to leave once again, officials said the panhandler attempted to choke and bite the security guard. The guard then shot the man in self-defense.

“I’ve never seen violence like that before,” said Metromover rider Robert Carroll. “I’ve seen crazies before but not violent.”

The panhandler was rushed via ground rescue to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds.

The Metromover is an electrically-powered train that runs on a 4.4-mile loop, stopping at various stations in the downtown area, and the incident happened next to the Miami-Dade County School Board building and Fischer Medical Center on

Miami Police say the incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed against the security guard at this time.

Yet another example of how guns save lives and I’m glad Miami has their Metromover security guards armed for their protection.
