Texas Deputy Is Shot to Death At Home After Making Emergency Radio Call

A Travis County (TX) Deputy was murdered in his own yard after coming home from work to find multiple suspects lurking in his backyard.

Police are searching for two burglary suspects after Sgt. Craig “Hutch” Hutchinson was killed in a shooting at his house early Monday morning.

Hutchinson, 54, was shot at his home on Oak Meadow Drive in the Cimmaron neighborhood, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton said Hutchinson had just finished his shift and was at home when he radioed the department around 1:22 a.m. stating he saw suspects running around his backyard. By 1:32 a.m. when officers arrived at Hutchinson’s house, they found his body near a creek behind his backyard with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a Round Rock Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Our officer came up on them and found individuals in his shed and I think that’s when the confrontation occurred,” said Hamilton. “At this time we don’t have any more information.”

It could very well be that the event surrounding Deputy Hutchinson’s death are exactly as they described, and this was simply a armed burglary gone wrong, but we simply don’t know since we don’t even know who the suspects are, much less what their motives might have been.

It’s also plausible that criminals lured Hutchinson into a trap, especially as the deputy was known as a expert in cracking burglary cases. There have been two ambushes of Dallas Police officers in as many weeks, with the most recent ambush occurring early Sunday morning.
