Sanford, FL PD "bans" guns from neighborhood watch (no, not really).

The Sanford Police Department has “banned” neighborhood watch volunteers from carrying firearms:

Almost two years after George Zimmerman shot and killed unarmed Trayvon Martin, and months after Zimmerman was acquitted for it, the new police Sanford chief is banning neighborhood watch volunteers from carrying guns.

Chief Cecil Smith said the changes are coming due to a lack of accountability in the town’s neighborhood watch program when Zimmerman shot Martin.

Smith took over as chief this past April.

Reality, of course, that such a ban is toothless.

Chief Smith can say whatever he desires, but he doesn’t have the legal authority to disarm watch volunteers .The most he can do is boot them from the program if they are suspected of carrying arms.

This is a public relations move, and nothing more.
