I swear, I didn't break the new SIG556xi!

“Check out the new SIG556xi rifle” said one of my readers on Twitter, and this was the result.

Sig556xi

It’s in pieces on the floor.  ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

No, I didn’t actually break it, but as I was checking out SIG’s new multi-caliber modular rifle, I did notice that over the course of the show someone had matched up a 7.62x39mm-chambered upper with the 5.56NATO lower (and vice versa, shown above), so we took these tactical Legos apart and put them back together on the floor of the SHOT Show, giving me a chance to see them broken down almost as much as you see in Sig’s introductory video.

The 556xi will be available in 5.56NATO, 300BLK, and 7.62×39, will have AR and AK lowers (you buy one with the rifle, the other comes at an extra cost) and have different bolts and barrels depending on how you want to configure the rifle, though thanks to the NFA, two of the three barrel lengths are restricted unless you want to register it as an SBR.

Here’s a side-by-side of the AR and AK lowers. Keep in mind that the stocks themselves are also modular.

That’s the AK lower on top, and the AR-lower on the bottom.

The trigger group has powerful springs, and plenty of room for grit and junk to fall out.

Depending on options, the SIG556xi will likely run you between $1,400 and $1,700 for one rifle, and there will be an additional cost for different lowers, barrels, bolts, stocks, etc.

I’m interested in trying one out.
