Bloomberg Businessweek is conceding that the British-born, gun-hating founder of Doctors For Obama simply doesn’t have the Democratic support to become Surgeon General, due in large part to opposition from the National Rifle Association:
By all indications, the National Rifle Association and allied gun-rights groups have killed the nomination of Dr. Vivek Murthy to be the next surgeon general. Senate aides are whispering that as many as 10 Democrats would likely vote against Murthy because he supports stricter gun control, according to the New York Times. In response, “the White House is considering delaying a vote … or withdrawing the nomination altogether.” When “the White House” publicly emits that kind of gloom, it’s a signal that the president wants his nominee to withdraw and stanch the political bleeding.
Bloomberg’s pet anti-gun writer Paul M. Barrett goes on to whine that “it’s ludicrous” Murthy is being shot down, but Barrett is disingenuous in his arguments.
Murthy does not have “ample professional qualifications.”
He’s never had a traditional medical practice, having spent his short career as a hospitalist. Murthy’s greatest accomplishments aren’t even medical (where he was adequate, but not spectacular); he is best known for founding Doctors for Obama and his continued championing of Obamacare, even as the faltering program suffocates under it’s own ponderous weight.
Murthy is nothing more or less than an Administrative cheerleader in a lab coat, and while he might make a nice prop for President Obama’s press conferences, he views are too radical and his experiences are too limited to be taken seriously… much like the man who nominated him.
