Shotgun cartridge manufacturer Rio Ammunition was apparently destroyed Wednesday night in an explosion and fire.

One person is dead and three others injured after an explosion at an ammunition plant west of Nashville Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at 3:45 a.m. at Rio Ammunition on Highway 230 in McEwen, about 55 miles west of Nashville in Humphreys County.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the explosion that occurred in a packing area of the facility primarily used for creating shotgun ammunition.

The blast blew out the back of the building.  Brush fires also ignited in the immediate area following the explosion.

Two LifeFlight helicopters from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center responded to the scene.

Four people were transported to the hospital where one man later died.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

This is the second ammunition industry explosion in as many months.

On March 5, PB Clermont SA, the second largest small arms propellant manufacturer in the world, suffered an after-hours explosion that destroyed their rifle powder grinding facility in Belgium. PB Clermony supplies propellant to most European rifle ammunition manufacturers and many in the United States.
