Marissa Alexander, the Florida woman who tried to claim a “stand your ground” defense after leaving the home to retrieve a handgun from her car that she then shot at her estranged husband, has pled guilty to all counts in a deal with prosecutors that will grant her a reduced sentence on at least some of the charges.
Facing a possible 60 years in prison for firing a gun at her estranged husband and his two sons, Marissa Alexander agreed Monday to a plea deal that effectively ends the four-year old criminal case against her.
According to the terms of the plea, Alexander was ordered to serve three years in prison after pleading guilty to all three counts against her. Alexander will get credit for the 1,030 days she’s already spent in jail.
That means she’ll have to spend 65 more days in jail. Alexander will return to Duval County Jail following Monday’s hearing. She’ll be released on Jan. 27.
Because the second count against Alexander is considered an ‘open plea,’ she could still be sentenced to five years in prison at the hearing on Jan. 27.
Alexander had become a symbolic victim at the time she was arrested and first tried, as many in the media attempted to compare her case to that of George Zimmerman, while purposefully overlooking key factual differences between the cases.
While Zimmerman was pinned to the ground, was being actively attacked by Trayvon Martin, and had to fire in self-defense, Alexander left the home, retrieved her handgun from her car, and reentered the home and opened fire on Rico Gray.
This wasn’t remotely a valid “stand your ground” claim, as two separate courts determined.
After her arrest, Alexander was ordered to stay away from her estranged husband, but returned to the home to conspire with him to doctor his testimony, and also to assault him again.
I have a suspicion that we’ll see her in court again in the future on new charges.
Good judgment is not one of her personality traits.
