We’re getting breaking news from Richmond, Virginia of an early afternoon shooting where it appears that a criminal suspect may be dead after exchanging fire with a police officer:
Police sources tell CBS 6 News that a Richmond police officer was shot during an officer-involved shooting in city’s East End Friday afternoon not far from Rockett’s Landing.
The sources said that the officer and a suspect were involved in a shooting at Fulton Street and Old Denny Street near Admiral Gravely Boulevard in the city’s Fulton neighborhood.
The officer has been transported to VCU Medical Center with what a source describes as non-life threatening injuries.
Those sources said the suspect was also shot. Multiple sources told CBS 6 News that the suspect is dead.
Video (at the link) shows that multiple properties have been marked off as part of a large potential crime scene.
It is not known at this time if the officer was responding to a call or if he was on routine patrol when he came under fire.

Update: Officer was responding to a “mental health check” call, and the suspect opened fire upon the officer when he arrived in the neighborhood.
