Supporters Of More Government Power Push For Gun Control

The ever hysterical inside-the-Beltway Washington Post editorialist E.J. Dionne whined shrilly last week about his imagined right to live in a society “free from guns.”

Dionne would first set his sights on outlawing handguns, by conspiring with his peers to manufacture the fiction that handguns are bad:

“We need to build a social movement devoted to the simple proposition that owning handguns makes us less safe, not more,” he told me. “The evidence is overwhelming that having a gun in your home increases the risks of suicide, domestic violence and fatal accidents, and yet the No. 1 reason given for gun purchases is ‘personal safety.’ We need a public-health campaign on the dangers of gun ownership, similar to the successful efforts against smoking and drunk driving.”

Dionne conveniently forgets to mention that as handgun ownership has spread to unprecedented levels, across all social strata, and across minority groups, armed violence from criminals has dropped.

He declines to mention that close to 12 million licensed concealed carriers bring their handguns to a wider number of locations every day, and that that number number that has more than doubled since 2007. He hides the fact that the number of suicides with firearms has remained relatively static, that accidents with firearms of all kinds are on a decades-long decline, and that handguns are the primary firearm used by law-abiding citizens in somewhere between 500,000-3.6 million defensive gun uses every year. That wouldn’t serve his narrative to remove handguns—and your right to defend yourself anywhere you may legally be—from public life, in a first step to remove all guns from public life.

He favors tyranny.

Writing in the same fish-wrap today, a self-described “community organizer” describes his loathing for the National Rifle Association while hiding behind what he imagines is a “but I’m a gun owner” shield. I, too, enjoy hunting, but unlike David Fellerath, I’m not going to lie to you, and assert that the Second Amendment is about hunting.

What neither man can admit writing in the rabidly anti-gun Washington Post is that the Second Amendment does not give you the right to own firearms.

The Second Amendment merely codifies a pre-existing natural right of human beings to be armed for their self defense against predators of every stripe, from wild animals, to predatory humans, to rogue governments.

Both Dionne and Fellerath shy away from the truth that the Founding Fathers embraced the Second Amendment as the Right of Revolution against corrupt and tyrannical government more than foreign enemies.

You my fellow citizens, have the natural human right to arm yourselves with weapons of contemporary design against enemies foreign and domestic, from small time criminals, to entire governments, once they have usurped individual liberties and attempt dominion over your basic human rights.

It was never better said than in our own Declaration of Independence.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security…

We are the guardians of our liberty, you and I. The governemnt defends only itself, and its own appetite.

Men like E.J. Dionne, David Fellerath, Barack Obama, and other devotees to the cult of centralized government see you as a clear and present danger to their desire to regulate, tax, and control every aspect of your life. They are convinced that they have the right to use the threat of government force to coerce you into laying aside your liberties to form their idea of a perfect society, even if their idea of centralized control is nothing more or less than federalized slavery.

They would cajole you, shame you, and threaten to use force against you in order to convince you to give up essential liberty, with hollow promises of providing temporary safety.

But they seek to provide for only their own safety.

There is a reason that they consistently attempt to ban those firearms that would be most useful in deposing tyrants by the majority, instead of targeting the actions of a small minority population which disproportionately commits armed violence. They could crush criminal violence if they truly desired to do so. Instead, they encourage, going so far as to arm criminals themselves.

If you love liberty, arm yourselves with knowledge of your rights, and the weaponry to secure your liberty.

Exercise your First Amendment rights and shout down these petty minions of a great evil, for if you do not, and allow your liberties to be stripped away bit by bit, you will one day be forced to resort to Second Amendment remedies when all peaceful options have failed.
