Kurt Schlichter, a Los Angeles trial attorney, recently-retired U.S. Army Infantry colonel, and all-around smart guy, has recently penned a nuanced and subtle response to those timid souls who claim that law-abiding American citizens shouldn’t be able to own the sort of firearms they desire.
Nah, I’m totally kidding you.
American gun owners are beginning to respond with a fresh, powerful argument when facing anti-gun liberals. Here it is, in its entirety. Ready?
“Screw you.” That’s it. Except the first word isn’t “Screw.”
It’s not exactly a traditional argument, but it’s certainly appropriate here. The fact is that there is no point in arguing with liberal gun-control advocates because their argument is never in good faith. They slander gun owners as murderers. They lie about their ultimate aim, which is to ban and confiscate all privately owned weapons. And they adopt a pose of reasonability, yet their position is not susceptible change because of evidence, facts or law. None of those matter – they already have their conclusion. This has to do with power – their power.
You can’t argue with someone who is lying about his position or whose position is not based upon reason. You can talk all day about how crime has diminished where concealed carry is allowed, while it flourishes in Democrat blue cities where gun control is tightest. You can point to statistics showing that law-abiding citizens who carry legally are exponentially less likely to commit gun crimes then other people. You can cite examples of armed citizens protecting themselves and their communities with guns. You can offer government statistics showing how the typical American is at many times greater risk of death from an automobile crash, a fall, or poisoning than from murder by gun.
But none of that matters, because this debate not about facts. It’s about power. The liberal anti-gun narrative is not aimed at creating the best public policy but at disarming citizens the liberal elite looks down upon – and for whom weapons represent their last-ditch ability to respond to liberal overreach.
Put simply, liberal elitists don’t like the fact that, at the end of the day, an armed citizenry can tell them, “No.”
And that, dear friends, sums it up in a nutshell, though you’ll be doing yourself a grave disservice if you don’t make the time to read the whole thing.
When push comes to shove, and you strip the lies and subterfuge out of the way, the radical left (and many of their moderate Republican allies) believe that the government should have more power than the people, and they hate that the Second Amendment is an eternal check upon that power.
When push comes to shove, the Second Amendment is the right of rebellion and revolution.
The Founding Fathers had just won their liberty from the British Empire with a long and grinding rebellion, a war that was triggered by a bloody gun control raid-turned-route in Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. When war ended and they formed a federal government, they made sure to include the Second Amendment to ensure that American citizens would always retain weapons capable of overthrowing the federal government when it became tyrannical.
Not that that was “when,” not “if.”
The Founders knew that all governments inevitably drift towards tyranny if unopposed, and if these governments are unchecked, they inevitably start slaughtering those citizens who oppose them.
That tendency towards bloody tyranny by government against their own citizens put 262,000,000 to death in the 20th century alone, a practice now reviled as democide.
The Second Amendment is our democide insurance.
It ensures that we’ll remain armed against tyrants with weapons of contemporary military utility. Today that means AR-15s, AKMs, and yes, even real machine guns. In decades to come, that could mean plasma cannons and man-portable rail guns. It was never meant to apply to just muskets.
Anti-gun politicians hate the Second Amendment because it ensures that they they can’t run roughshod over the American people, and that if they try, they’ll wind up being shot to shreds.
God Bless America, and pass the ammunition.
