As Jenn Jacques noted here several days ago, anti-gun leftists from the White House on down are attempting to exploit the Umpqua Community College mass murder to call for dramatic restrictions on the Second Amendment rights of Americans. Some are even screaming for outright repeal.
Our friends at Reason pointed out just how difficult that repeal process really is with a tongue-in-cheek video.
Want to create a gun-free America in 5 easy steps?
Here’s all there is to it:
Step 1: Elect. For a gun-free America, the first thing you’ll need is two-thirds of Congress. So elect a minimum of 67 Senators and 290 Representatives who are on your side.
Step 2: Propose. Then, have them vote to propose an amendment to the Constitution which repeals Second Amendment gun rights for all Americans.
Step 3: Ratify. Then convince the legislators of 38 states to ratify that change.
At this point, the Second Amendment is history, but you’ve done nothing to decrease gun violence. All you’ve done is remove the barrier for Congress to act.
Step 4: Legislate. You need to enact “common sense” reform.
You can try to do what Australia did and…ban all guns? That’s not at all what they did, but whatever, f**k it. Go big or go home, right?
It will have to be passed by Congress and signed by the president.
Great! The law is passed and guns are now illegal. The only thing left to do is…
Step 5: Enforce. Guns won’t just disappear because you passed a law. You need to confiscate some 350 million guns scattered among 330 Million Americans.
It’s Step 5, Enforcement, that amuses me the most.
Why?
The radical left has had a very low opinion of law enforcement officers and the U.S. military for over 50 years, and the relationship between law enforcement and the Democrat Party nationwide has gotten far worse in recent years.
The left truly, arrogantly believes that if they pass a law over the will of the people that law enforcement officers—whom they clearly view as dumb and violent drones—will simply follow orders, and enforce these laws without reservation.
They clearly aren’t paying attention.
Democrats have forced through draconian gun laws in Connecticut, New York, and Oregon in recent years, and the response from law enforcement and citizens in each state has been to tell their legislatures and governments to go pound sand.
After Connecticut passed a law demanding the registration of certain firearms, the people responded by flagrantly ignoring the law. Less than 4% of the applicable firearms and magazines were registered by the state’s gun owners. When government officials threatened gun owners, residents in the Constitution State told them to bring it on. The Connecticut state government, suddenly realizing that 5,000 state police don’t match up well against 200,000 gun owners, backed off.
A similar story played out in New York, where downstate liberals rammed through the NY SAFE Act and demanded gun owners register their “assault weapons.” Upstate New Yorkers responded by refusing to register more than one million firearms, and dare New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to do anything about it. Other than crying for more gun control, he hasn’t.
The same scenario is playing out to a lesser degree in Oregon, where Michael Bloomberg spent a huge among of money to push through universal background checks, only to have Oregon’s law enforcement heads say that the law is unconstitutional and unenforceable, and that they wouldn’t even try.
The military has an even dimmer view of enforcing gun control laws on American citizens than law enforcement does. 1,100 of our most elite soldiers, the Green Berets of the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, politely and subtly reminded President Obama in 2013 that if the government attacked the Second Amendment, they’d create an insurgency and topple the government.
The anti-gun left can whine.
The old hippies and the hipsters and the university Marxists can shriek and wail until they are hoarse.
What they can’t do is cajole law enforcement and the military to undermine a natural right to armed self-defense that cannot be repealed, and they sure as heck don’t have the courage, the training, or the manpower to attempt to take the firearms from 100 million American gun owners.
Come and take them, hipsters.
If you dare.
