I met John Johnston of Ballistic Radio in a Sentinel Concepts shotgun class last year, and have followed Melody Lauer on Facebook for a good six months because of her very interesting perspectives on real-world defensive handgun training for people with families. I don’t know about you, but all the rifle, pistol, and shotgun classes I’ve taken have been in the contexts of acting individually, in pairs, or as part of a fireteam with other adults.

But that’s not the world most of us live in. We’re not generally running around with our buddies from gun school.

We’re facing the world on a day-to-day basis with our spouses and children, as a family. It is as a family that we may encounter that once-in-a-lifetime deadly force threat… so how do we handle that successfully? How do we deal with not just the deadly force threat, but having to deploy and use weapons without muzzling our family members, and hopefully getting them moved to a position of safety while we engage the threat?

John and Ballistic Radio have created a training division called Citizens’ Defense Research, with Melody as the Director of Training to help answer those questions.

Here’s their interview with Firearms Nation. If you are a parent with children still at home and are curious about how to best defend them, this video and Citizens’ Defense Research may be worth your time.
