In the wake of the deadliest Islamic terror attack in the United States since 9/11, Democrats and Republicans in the United States Senate will once again take a trip to crazy town and attack the Bill of Rights tonight instead of the actual problem of Islamic radicalization.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has scheduled up to four procedural votes for Monday evening after Democrats took control of the floor for nearly 15 hours to protest congressional inaction on the issue.
Senators will take votes on competing measures from Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) aimed at blocking likely terrorists from buying guns or explosives.
Cornyn’s proposal would allow the attorney general to delay suspected terrorists from getting a gun for up to 72 hours while seeking a court order to stop the sale.
It would also let the attorney general delay the sale of a gun to anyone who has been the subject of a terror investigation within the past five years.
The latter provision comes after gunman O___ M___*—who was previously on a federal watchlist—killed 49 people and injured 53 more in a packed gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
Democrats, however, have balked at the GOP measure, arguing it adds unnecessary hurdles to letting the attorney general block a gun sale.
Instead, they are backing Feinstein’s measure to allow the attorney general to deny the sale of a gun if there is a “reasonable suspicion” that an individual has or will be involved in a terrorist attack.
But Republicans have disavowed the proposal as too broad, saying it would negatively impact Americans who aren’t tied to terrorism.
With 60 votes needed to move forward, it’s unclear if either of the proposals will be able to get enough support to move forward.
None of these proposed measures would have stopped the terrorist who attacked Pulse night club in Orlando shortly after 2:00 AM, and who wasn’t put down by Orlando SWAT unit—along with an unknown number of fleeing hostages—until three hours later. The 29-year-old terrorist had a history of violent behavior and threats dating back to high school and ties to several well-known radical Islamists, including terrorists and hate-spewing imams.
No one who knew the Islamist terrorist was even mildly surprised that he was behind the attack. We’re simply very fortunate that he chose to buy firearms and carry out a shooting instead of building a suicide car bomb that could have killed all 320 patrons in the club as well as nearby residents.
Tonight’s votes are an example of political opportunism by Senate Democrats intent on attacking the Constitution as if it were their personal enemy, and an example of cowardice from Republicans who fear being called Islamophobic for addressing the real problem.
Nothing is going to be done about the real problem of radical Islam… until we have another major attack, with hundreds or thousands dead.
We’ll never learn.
