BREAKING: Up to Seven Officers Down In Baton Rouge Ambush

Numerous law enforcement officers are believed to have been killed in an ambush in Baton Rouge.

Three officers are feared dead after a shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, officials said.

Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish Kip Holden, said authorities were still trying to get a handle on the situation, but added, “The count is three officers dead possibly.”

The victims may include police officers and sheriff’s deputies.

“There is still an active scene. They are investigating,” he said. “Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.”

The shooter is believed to be down as well, Holden said.

“Everything is moving fast and I have not been able to verify everything,” he said.

WBRZ-TV has more details.

Police have closed streets between Baton Rouge Police Headquarters and I-12 where law enforcement officers have been shot.

Sources say two Baton Rouge Police officers and one East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office deputy are dead following the shooting. Another officer was critically injured.

A witness told WBRZ News 2, a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza.  Shots were fired around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Live reports coming in from local television are claiming that to seven officers were shot by a masked man who was first reporting walking down the street with a rifle. Three officers are believed to be deceased. Four more injured.

We cannot confirm that the murderer is down or in custody.

At this time there is no known motive for this attack on law enforcement officers, but most people will be quick to tie the shooting to residual anger over the shooting death of Alton Sterling, a convicted felon shot and killed during a struggle over an illegally-acquired handgun several weeks ago.

Three people were arrested in Baotn Rogue less than a week ago in a plot to murder police officers.

We’ll update this story as we have more information.

Officials have confirmed that three law enforcement officers have died and several others were injured during an early morning shooting on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway in Baton Rouge. They also say one suspect is dead and believe two others may still be at large.

A witness described hearing at least 25 to 30 gunshots in the area of the B Quick store on Airline Hwy. It started shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

“I walked out into the street to see what was going on, there was a man lying in the street,” the witness said. “I assume he was dead because he wasn’t moving.”

The witness tells us the shooting started before police arrived.

“This was not a come at police shooting,” the witness said. “There were men out here shooting at each other before police ever got here.”

Investigators are working to determine how many shooters were possibly involved.

It remains to be seen if there really were multiple suspects, and if there was shooting prior to officers arriving, and if shots were fired to draw officers to the location.

Bystander video is also beginning to come in.

Update: Four officers are dead. It appears that at least one the suspects fired randomly to provoke a police response, then the other suspects ambushed officers as they arrived.

Update: The dead—and only confirmed—suspect has ties to the black supremacist hate group Nation of Islam.
