The university has been placed on lockdown, and the area has been swarmed with officers from multiple law enforcement agencies wearing heavy body armor and carrying long guns as the search for the suspect intensifies.

In a press conference at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Americus Police Chief Mark Scott said that one Americus police officer was killed and a Georgia Southwestern State University campus officer was injured.

Scott said the Americus Police Department received the call of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex near Georgia Southwestern at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He said the officer responded and a Georgia Southwestern campus officer went to the scene as backup.

He said the two officers were shot by the suspect, later identified as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32. The Americus police officer died and the Georgia Southwestern officer was life-flighted to a Macon hospital.

Looking at his mug shot in an orange jumpsuit, it appears that the suspected cop-killer, Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, is well aware of life inside a jail cell. Here’s hoping that he can be taken into custody without a further loss of life.

The Georgia Southwestern State University campus officer remains in critical condition. We’re hoping he or she pulls through.
