This is not another mass shooting false alarm. Sadly this one appears to be confirmed.
Nine people have been shot and at least one person is dead after a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday, local law enforcement told NBC News.
The shooter is in custody, and the motive is unknown at this time.
Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer — who was at the airport at the time — tweeted about the shooting.
We’ll update this when we have more information.
Update: 2:53 PM.
Five people are dead and a shooting suspect is in custody Friday after a lone gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida without saying a word, witnesses and authorities say.
A shooting took place around 1 p.m. local time and 8 people who were injured were transported to hospitals, the Broward County Sheriff said. The city’s mayor said there was only one shooter involved.
There are early reports that the shooter is a hispanic male with a military ID who fired three magazines from a handgun at the baggage claim area before putting his gun down, sitting down, and waiting to be apprehended.
Update: 2:57 PM.
Mark Lea, who said he was a witness to the shootings, told MSNBC that the shooter was a man, wearing a Star Wars T-shirt, and that he walked into the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 and opened fire with a single handgun.
Lea said the man said nothing as we he went through three magazines before giving up and sprawling spread-eagle on the flood as a police officer took him into custody.
“He had no intention of escaping,” Lea told MSNBC.
Baggage claim areas are not in the secure part of an airport, and there are no security measures (other than random police foot patrols) that would have any effect on deterring this kind of attack.
Update: 3:49 PM.
A county official says the Fort Lauderdale airport shooter pulled a gun out of a checked bag, loaded in a bathroom and started shooting, killing five people and wounding at least eight.
Chip LaMarca, a Broward County commissioner, was briefed on the airport shooting by Broward Sheriff’s office. He told The Associated Press by phone that the shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight and had checked a gun.
LaMarca says the shooter pulled out the gun in the bathroom after claiming his bag.
