South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs, recovering from three gun shot wounds, was reportedly arrested in the hospital Monday after being involved in an apparent road-rage incident off campus on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old, who is in stable condition, is facing three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to multiple reports.

On Saturday around 11:15 p.m., Tampa police received a phone call from Jovanni Jimenez, 26, who told the cops that a man had pointed a gun at him, his wife and child at the Eagles Point Apartments at Tampa Palms.

Jimenez said he then took out a gun and shot the man in self defense. The man was later identified as Childs, who was hit three times in the torso and upper arm.

Both men have concealed weapons permits, police told ESPN.

On Sunday, football coach Charlie Strong said the team was “deeply concerned.”

Both Jimenez and Childs were concealed carry permit holders, but it appears that Childs unlawfully brandished his firearm, earning himself three aggravated assault charges and just as many bullets.

Firearms are to be used to protect your life and the lives of those you love. They are not to be used to terrorize other people, and those who do risk being criminally charged, shot, or both, as Childs was in this incident.

One Childs threatened Jovanni Jimenez and his family, Jimenez had every right to produce his own concealed weapon and end the threat.

Fortunately Mr. Jimenez did not have to take a life to end the threat posted by Childs.

Childs, however, is probably looking at the end of his football career and quite possibly his education at the University of South Florida if the incident occurred as reported with Childs being the aggressor.
