A dispute most fowl.
A Coos Bay man was arrested Wednesday afternoon for threatening his neighbor with a shotgun.
Coos County Sheriff deputies apprehended Anthony Lewis, 56, after he admitted to approaching his neighbor’s property with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the 92800 block of Persimmon Lane in Coos Bay.
According to a department press release, the altercation stemmed from an argument over roaming chickens.
Lewis’ neighbor, David Rigney, 51, told deputies he asked Lewis to remove chickens that had wandered onto his yard.
Rigney said Lewis responded by returning to the property armed with a shotgun, which he pointed at Rigney and “threatened to shoot and kill him.”
Lewis allegedly said, “I’m gonna kill you, white trash.”
American citizens have the right to bear arms, but they also bear the responsibility of using those arms in an intelligent and judicious manner.
Mr. Lewis foolishly and criminally responded to a reasonable request to remove his chickens from Mr. Rigney’s property with a threat of deadly force. Lewis was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, and pointing a firearm at another. If convicted, there’s a decent chance he will lose his gun rights for the rest of his life (unlawful use of a weapon is a felony).
Over chickens.
