Virginia Delegate (and 7th Congressional District candidate) Nick Freitas is debuting a new podcast called “Making The Argument,” which he hopes will present “relevant arguments to a diverse audience” on a number of topics, including the Second Amendment.

Freitas drew national attention a couple of years ago with his speech on the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates rejecting calls for more gun control in the wake of the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In that speech, Freitas defended the right to keep and bear arms and rejected the idea that disarming citizens could somehow make America a safer place. Millions watched Freitas’ speech online, and in the years since, he’s continued to be a voice for Second Amendment defenders in the Virginia legislature, including during the most recent session.

Freitas tells Bearing Arms that one of the first episodes of his new podcast will focus on Second Amendment issues, but he also plans on talking about healthcare, capitalism versus socialism, and other civil liberties issues. As for the current debate in some states about whether or not gun stores should be considered “essential businesses,” Freitas says there’s no question in his mind.

“It seems like everyone who’s said that buying a gun isn’t essential is protected by firearms,” he said with a chuckle. “I think all of our civil liberties are essential. Yes, in our current situation there may be things we have to do to allocate resources, but that doesn’t mean that the Constitution goes out the window, especially when it comes to our right to protect ourselves.”

Freitas also says he’s interested to see if any of the new gun owners across the country will now be standing up for the Second Amendment, especially those who’ve run into roadblocks in their attempt to purchase a firearm.

As for his primary campaign to become the Republican nominee for the 7th Congressional District, which is seen as one of the best chances in the state for the GOP to win back a House seat currently held by Democrats, Freitas says he’s focused more at the moment on his job as delegate in the state legislature and serving his constituents during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly first responders, small businesses, and individuals who’ve lost their jobs in recent weeks.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced this week that the primary elections, originally scheduled for June 9th, would be pushed back two weeks to June 23rd. There’s a crowded field of nine candidates vying to take on Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a first-term Democrat who defeated Rep. Dave Brat in the 2018 blue wave election that allowed Democrats to take control of the U.S. House. Freitas and fellow Del. John McGuire are the likely front-runners in the Republican primary, though polling in the primary remains scant at best.
