PA Doctor And School Board Member Threatens To Shoot The Unmasked

Another example of a “killer Karen”? Eh, not quite, but a school board member in Pennsylvania is (rightfully) facing criticism from her community after an unhinged rant on Facebook about reopen protestors, which included a threat to shoot anyone who approaches her family without wearing a mask.

Dr. Jennifer Rager-Kay is a school board member in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania who’s run unsuccessfully as a Democrat for a seat in the state legislature. Last week, she complained about a recent reopen protest at the state capitol building in Harrisburg, and even though the post was made on a private Facebook page, her post was widely shared by Selinsgrove residents and others.

“I find it interesting that the largest group of the participants in the anti-lockdown protest and refusing to wear masks in public as they see it as a violation of their constitutional rights are among those against a form of gun regulations.

“As a concerned carry-permitted gun owner, if you refuse to wear a mask and try to come within 6 feet of me or my family, I will exercise the same constitutional rights to shoot you.”

This is one of the dumbest reactions to not wearing a mask that I’ve seen, but Rager-Kay doubled down on her idiotic overreaction with one of those passive-aggressive non-apologies that will likely only make things worse.

“I would like to publicly apologize to anyone offended by my recent post regarding the hypocrisy of those who refuse to wear face masks yet walk around openly carrying guns.

Apologies to “anyone offended,” but no apologies for what she actually said. Got it.

“I am in a profession where the threat of someone approaching me not wearing a mask while in the midst of a pandemic is equivalent to the threat against my life. Just as it would be if they approached me with their gun drawn and pointed at me.

No, it’s really not the same thing at all, and I say that as someone who does wear a mask when going to the store. I have a wife with a compromised immune system, and I’d wager I’m at least as concerned about protecting my wife from the coronavirus as Rager-Kay is about protecting herself. Strangely, though, I’ve never threatened to shoot anyone not wearing a mask that came near me, because I’m not a lunatic.

“As a wife, mother and physician, it is my job and responsibility to “do no harm” and the constant barrage of protests and defiance to public health reached a boiling point for me, thus the reason for my overly dramatic and exaggerated post. My words demonstrated how constitutional rights can be misinterpreted, and were meant to serve as an example of extremism.

I’m calling b.s. on this. Rager-Kay’s post didn’t come off as sarcastic or exaggerated. It came across as unhinged.

“Bioterrorism is, however, a real threat and refusal to prevent and/or the intentional release or dissemination of biological agents by not wearing a mask during a global pandemic is a clear example. I am sorry if my words were offensive or derogatory in any way. My concern and compassion for human life got the best of me.”

So, threatening to shoot someone not wearing a mask is “overly dramatic and exaggerated,” but calling someone a bioterrorist for not wearing a mask is an example of “concern and compassion for human life”? Not a chance. In fact, the real kicker to this story is that Rager-Kay is apparently fine with people not wearing masks spending time with her family, as long as there’s a present involved.

Ironically, her Facebook page also has a video of a parade of fire equipment and others marking her son’s seventh birthday last Friday during which a firefighter hands the boy a gift.

Neither is wearing a mask.

Here’s a hint for the doctor: it’s the Hippocratic Oath, not the Hypocritical Oath. If Rager-Kay had been truly interested in serving the community, she could have talked about the fact that, while masks aren’t completely effective in stopping the spread of the COVID-19 virus, they do help. Instead, she made it clear in both her original post and her “apology” that her bedside manner involves berating, demeaning, and threatening people who don’t mask up when they’re in a social setting.

Even after the flood of criticism, Rager-Kay still believes that she’s the real victim here.

Later Monday, Rager-Kay posted this on her Facebook page: “Thank you to those who have reached out with support regarding the repercussions of my recent post demonstrating my profound concern of those who refuse to wear a mask during this devastating pandemic.

“Apparently, there were those who took enough offense to take drastic efforts to affect my personal and professional life including calling for my resignation from school board as well as contacting local newspapers, articles which I’m sure will be published soon.

“My post was described as hateful, but hateful suggests a lack of love. And to me, lack of love is demonstrated by refusing to wear a mask out of love for those you encounter.”

She threatened to shoot anyone not wearing a mask. That sounds more like “psycho” than “love” to me. I think it’s time for Rager-Kay to take a break from social media for awhile, and maybe replace the screen time with some anger management sessions.
