I love father-daughter bonding time and I love armed citizen tales with a happy ending, so this story from Salina, Kansas checks a lot of boxes for me. It all starts with a man breaking through the door of Ron Griffin’s home the other night.

Ron, “Rodeo” Griffin says he noticed the man who broke into his home was bleeding from his foot . Griffin tried to talk to the man who said he was running away from someone.

Griffin says it wasn’t until the intruder closed his door and attempted to lock it that he felt threatened. He asked his 12-year-old daughter to grab his gun to protect them.

“I (told) him, ‘don’t come any closer this way because I will shoot you,'” Griffin says.

Griffin is 63-years old, and recovering from quadruple bypass surgery. In a one-on-one fistfight, he might not have been able to take on the intruder. Armed with his legally owned gun, however, he was able to hold the suspect at bay. In fact, his 12-year old daughter Macy says they were prepared for something like this.

“We kinda always are prepared for these situations, so if these situations ever happen, we’re kind of you know, prepared and ready.”

Griffin held the man at gunpoint and says the police showed up within minutes after the call to them. Police took the intruder into custody.

Griffin says he’s proud of his daughter and glad they are safe.

“You got a 12-year-old daughter in the house, you’re gonna do what you can to protect her,” he says.

I’m glad they’re safe too. We hear about “grizzly moms”, but “grizzly dads” are no joke either. In this situation, it sounds like Griffin and his daughter have talked quite a bit about home defense and gun safety, which helped in that stressful situation. When I was 12, I’m not sure how well I would have handled a home intruder, to be honest. It sounds like Macy did just fine, as did her father.

And the criminal in this case? Well, whoever or whatever he thought was chasing him won’t be able to get to him from behind his jail cell, so that’s one small bit of good news for the suspect. The bad news is he’s probably looking at some more jail time, and likely a felony charge before all is said and done.

This is a pretty compelling story of armed self-defense, but like most cases, it hasn’t received any real national media attention, which is a real shame. I suspect the national media’s anti-gun narrative is getting in the way of their reporting on a great example of a defensive gun use, but at least we can do our part to share the story of a father protecting his daughter, and the daughter protecting her dad.
