While the anthem protests have been largely confined to the NFL, there have been a few rogue athletes in other sports that have joined in on the demonstration.
Last month, Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell made headlines when he became the first, and only, athlete in the MLB to take a knee during our national anthem.
This weekend, Maxwell’s face was once again plastered across national news, but not because of his kneeling. On Saturday night, the catcher was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct. Ironic much?
According to reports, Maxwell pointed a gun at a food delivery driver at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, it is currently unknown what caused him to pull the weapon.
His team addressed the situation in a brief statement on Sunday.
We were disappointed to learn of the allegations. We take this situation and ongoing investigation seriously. We are gathering information from the proper authorities and do not have further comment at this time.
Spokesman for the Scottsdale police, Sgt. Tyler Johnson, says Maxwell is still being held and is awaiting his first court appearance.
