New York Mayor Bill De Blasio is certainly some kind of special. In an attempt to convince us of the positive benefits of gun control, he boldly made a statement that is worthy of a full-blown NRA campaign.

“I’m not a criminologist but I can safely say that guns are being taken off the street in an unprecedented way. Some people (unfortunately) are turning to a different weapon – thank God, typically a less deadly weapon – but they’re turning to a different weapon,” the mayor said. “Well, guess what that means. The NYPD will now go get those weapons.”

For once, the man speaks the truth. Criminals, when void of the option of a gun for a weapon, will turn to a different weapon.

Well ya don’t say. 

The streets of the Big Apple are a little meaner these days, seeing an influx in random attacks with objects other than guns such as knives and razors. In fact, the first six weeks of 2016 set a disturbing pace, averaging more than 10 stabbing attacks per week.

De Blasio’s comments yield little comfort in a city where the number of violent attacks continue to shock and frighten defenseless residents. In February, de Blasio was forced to announce emergency security for hotel shelters after a triple-stabbing murder which claimed the lives of a 26-year-old mother of three and two of her small children.

Officers have confiscated 212 cutting instruments in the subways alone. That’s a whopping 46% increase over last year. Not surprising is the number of slashings and stabbings across the city is up over 20 percent in 2016. What does NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton have to say about these numbers?

That the streets of New York are “safer than ever.”

No word from the victims’ on whether or not they have thanked God for being stabbed rather than being shot or how they feel about not being able to defend themselves legally against their blade-weilding attackers.

Perhaps these leaders’ New York values have failed to teach them the true meaning of the word safe.
